Last night trainer Gai Waterhouse booked Tom Berry to ride Tres Blue in the Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup, Tuesday 5 November.

The 22 year old jockey has quickly developed into one of Australia's leading jockeys in the past 18 months. Currently leading the jockey's premiership in metropolitan NSW, Berry has ridden six Group 1 winners since last autumn including some of Australia's most prestigious events:

  • Overreach - Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m)
  • Sacred Falls - Group 1 Doncaster Handicap (1600m)
  • Fat Al - Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m)
  • Glencadam Gold - Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m)
  • Epaulette - Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m)

Berry's three month stint in Hong Kong in the middle of 2013 resulted in further Group 1 success aboard Military Attack in the HKJC Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Most importantly the experience of competing against the world's best jockeys further sharpened his skills and took his riding to another level, his 21 winning rides at Sha Tin and Happy Valley a clear illustration of this.

Tom Berry has a real belief in Tres Blue's ability to win the 2013 Melbourne Cup and has committed to riding Tres Blue in all his work leading into the feature race to ensure he gets to know the colt as well as he possibly can.

Berry rode in the Melbourne Cup for the first time last year, finishing a creditable sixth aboard $41 chance Glencadam Gold.

Lets hope he can go five better this year aboard Tres Blue.
